OH BOY! GET TO KNOW THE TOP THREE DESIGNERS OF THE MICKEY DESIGN CHALLENGE
By Michelle Theseira
Our favorite mouse will always be our best fashion muse.
As part of Mickey’s 90th-anniversary celebrations, we made sure to commemorate his magical 90 years of style with our very own Mickey Design Challenge!
In collaboration with SoFA Design Institute, we invited up-and-coming fashion designers to draw inspiration and creative ideas from our favorite mouse – ultimately coming up with their very own Mickey-inspired fashion collection!
Hundreds of designers sketched their way to make the final cut – where 10 designers were chosen to showcase their unique collection at the fashion show on November 18 at Ayala Triangle Gardens.
The winners were chosen soon after the show, with the prize being a magical internship at Disney Philippines!
Let’s take a look at how the top three designs came to life!
Coming through as the second runner-up is Candle Ray Torreverde, 25, who drew inspiration from vintage references from the 1920s to the 1960s. She even incorporated the fun little element of “Hidden Mickeys” to truly bring out the fun and cheeky side of Mickey! Can you spot them?
The first runner-up is Carla Zhang, 23, whose collection set out to encapsulate the nostalgic childhood memories she holds dear to her, entitling her collection “The Little Things About Mickey”. With companionship and nostalgia being the main inspiration for her pieces, it definitely is a collection that brings out the good ol’ old school feel.
Lastly, reigning as the grand prize winner is Farah Zavala, 21, whose collection was inspired by Mickey short films The Nifty Nineties and The Simple Things, alongside the Mickey Marching Band. Using some of Mickey’s most iconic looks, Farah too gave a nod to her nostalgic childhood memories in this collection.
The collections from all 10 designers were nothing short of personal, creative, unique and oh boy – truly magical!
The celebration also included the unveiling of the Ayala Land Inc.’s “Reimagine the Magic: A Festival of Lights”. It was a night of upbeat music, vibrant lights, and of course, an amazing runway filled with fresh and innovative designs from these young, inspiring designers.
